Beer stein
A beer stein or Steinkrug is a traditionally German beer tankard or beaker, made of pewter, silver, wood, porcelain, earthenware, stoneware or glass. Modern Steinkrüge or stonejugs are usually found with a hinged lid and levered thumblift.
In Germany, it is usually called a Steinkrug, if it is stoneware, or Glaskrug if it is made of glass.
The generic term is Maßkrug, literally meaning "dosage gauged jug", whereby the dosage is nowadays 1 litre of beer. In former days the dosage of 1 Mass was 1.069 litre.
As you might know, the beer at the Oktoberfest usually comes in 1 litre mugs. Those mugs exist in two versions. Usually, beer is served in glass mugs. However, collectors and also Oktoberfest veterans prefer mugs made of stone. the beer steins.
The advantage is that the beer usually remains a lot cooler in a stone mug. To this, stone mugs also very often come with a tin lid on them. This tin lid keeps dust, dirt and insects out of your beer. The tin lid usually also has a picture engraved in it, which makes it a beautiful collectors' item.
