The Oktoberfest
The world's biggest fair, the Oktoberfest, has its origins in the year 1810. It was in that year that the heir to the throne of Bavaria, called Ludwig, married a woman called Therese. To celebrate that marriage, a festival was held at the same place, where the Oktoberfest takes place, today. That 's why the place has been named after the bride: Theresienwiese.
The original marriage-party was also a sports-festival with a horserace as the most spectacular event. From then on, this horserace was repeated every year and that is how the annual tradition of the Oktoberfest was born.
In the year 1910, the 100th anniversary, about 12.000 hectoliters of beer were sold. Today, that has risen to over 60.000 hectolitres, which are sold to over 6 million visitors.
